When receiving charge the Li-ion flow is reversed, Li-Ions are returned to the anode. It is essential that a balance is maintained and there are sufficient Li-Ions at the anode and cathode after discharge or recharge. Quando la batteria viene lasciata in uno stato parzialmente scarico per troppo tempo, il solfato di piombo non convertito (Pb-SO4) si cristallizza e si indurisce sulla superficie delle piastre, rendendone pi\u00f9 difficile lo scioglimento quando la batteria riceve nuovamente la carica. La ridotta superficie di piombo influisce sulla capacit\u00e0 della batteria di fornire e trattenere energia, cio\u00e8 la batteria \u00e8 diventata pi\u00f9 piccola (meno capacit\u00e0 Ah) e quindi pi\u00f9 debole. Quando la batteria si scarica, la concentrazione di acido solforico si riduce e il contenuto di acqua aumenta, il che aumenta il punto di congelamento dell'elettrolita verso quello dell'acqua. Una batteria al 50% di carica ha un punto di congelamento di circa -22\u00b0F \/ -30\u00b0C, ma l'elettrolita di una batteria completamente scarica \u00e8 principalmente acqua (H2O) con un punto di congelamento di 32\u00b0F \/ 0\u00b0C. Quando l'acqua si congela, si espande del 120% e rompe la batteria dall'interno.
