Marine and boating enthusiasts primarily use four types of batteries: Flooded Lead-Acid (FLA or Ca-Ca), Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM), GEL, and Lithium (LFP/LiFePO4). These batteries supply power to navigation electronics, lighting, pumps, refrigerators, and other onboard equipment, including an electrical trolling motor or outboard.
Many boats use multiple batteries connected in PARALLEL to increase available capacity, OR SERIES to increase voltage to 24V or 36V, but each battery in the bank can be charged separately as a 12V battery.
Lithium batteries are increasingly used to replace traditional lead-acid batteries because they are lighter, more efficient, and provide longer usable autonomy compared to a lead-acid battery with the same rated capacity (in amp-hours). Lithium batteries designed for marine deep-cycle applications typically include an integrated Battery Management System (BMS) that protects the battery from conditions such as over-discharge, over-charge, and temperature extremes. If limits are exceeded, the BMS can disconnect the battery internally, cutting power to the terminals to prevent damage. A 24V Lithium battery is a single unit i.e. not made up of separate 12V batteries.
Lithium batteries are generally considered the high-performance, premium option, while lead-acid technologies (FLA, AGM, and GEL) remain the most widely used and budget-friendly solutions for marine battery systems.

EASY – The EASY group is for ‘connect and forget’ battery maintenance when you are not using your 12V boat or marine battery or your RV’s engine starter battery. It includes all OptiMate2 DUO chargers that automatically adapt to your 12V battery’s chemistry, be it lead-acid (STD, AGM, GEL) or lithium )LFP / LiFePO4). Use – Connect to the battery and that’s it. The OptiMate2 DUO battery charger automatically adapts and then charges & maintains the battery. MORE – The MORE group of battery chargers offer additional features such as low volt battery saving and testing and remains easy to use. To save the battery from deep discharge they are battery chemistry specific (Pb or LFP), so that the recovery method exactly matches the battery chemistry. After saving and charging, it will test and maintain the battery.
Use – Connect to the battery and the charger will automatically** diagnose, save, charge, test and then maintain the battery. ** Some require initial voltage selection or pushbutton activated reset (Lithium).

BEST – The BEST group of chargers offer selection of charge voltage and/or type of lead-acid battery, or selection between lead-acid (STD & AGM) and lithium (LFP/LiFePO4) chemistries. Once selection has been made and memorized*** the OptiMate battery charger automatically recovers, saves, charges, tests and then maintains the battery. OptiMate Lithium, or OptiMate Select battery chargers with Lithium LFP option, have a pushbutton activated BMS reset option, to reset a’zero’ volt battery so that it can once again accept charge.

A lithium battery may only receive a maintenance charge every few days or weeks, depending on the drain of connected circuitry. OptiMate DUO or Lithium or Select (with LFP selection) battery chargers monitor the lithium battery's charge level hourly and will only deliver a maintenance charge if it sensed the state of charge dropped below 70%. Charge level is brought back up to 90% as is recommended for lithium battery technology. Connect & forget for MORE battery power and LONGER battery life!
