What does the Quad program mean on the OptiMate 4?

OptiMate 4 Quad Program includes four charging programs; the standard program for lead-acid batteries is supposed to be used when connecting directly to the battery, the CANbus (BMW) program for lead-acid batteries allows charging and maintaining via the DIN socket on BMW Motorcycles (models 2004 and later).

Does OptiMate 4 have a battery recovery program?

Yes, the standard program has the most advanced recovery program which saves 'dead flat' sulphated batteries from as low as 0,5V.

Which program do I need to select to charge through the 12V socket on my BMW?

You'll need to select Program 2 (Pb-CAN-bus) or Program 4 (LFP-CAN-bus) depending on the type of battery in your BMW motorcycle. Program 2 is for a 12V sealed lead-acid battery - your sealed battery may be marked 12V VRLA, GEL or AGM. Program 4 is for a 12.8V LFP (Li-Ion with chemistry LiFePO4) battery.

How do I select the correct program?

Disconnect the OptiMate 4 from the battery or vehicle. Push and release the pushbutton switch. The mode selection changes when the button is released. Continue to press and release until the desired program has been selected. If no futher selection is made for at least 3 seconds SAVE (#3), CHARGE (#4), OPTIMIZE(#5) and TEST (#6,7, 8) LEDs flash twice to confirm selection is in memory.

What's the difference between the OptiMate 4 Quad Program and the OptiMate 4 Quad Program Premium edition?

The standard edition is delivered with a set of battery clips (O-04), a permanent battery lead (O-01) and a handlebar hanging hook to suspend the charger from the handlebar. The Premium edition includes all the same accessories PLUS a SAE to DIN adapter (O-19) to connect directly to 12V DIN sockets on BMW and Triumph motorcycles.

I want to connect and charge through the 12V socket, which additional adapter do I need?

Can I charge my Triumph motorcycle through the 12V DIN socket?

Yes, IF the socket is ‘live’ (hot) when the motorcycle ignition is turned off. (TIP: Recent model Triumph Tiger 850/900 and 1200/1250 have a live socket near the instrument panel.). Select program 1 or 3 for direct-to-battery charging as the socket is directly connected to the battery.

What type and size batteries does OptiMate 4 Quad Program charge?

STD, AGM and GEL 12V lead-acid & 12.8V / 13.2V lithium LFP (LiFePO4) batteries used for engine start & deep cycle applications. For lead-acid batteries from 4Ah to 60Ah for 24-7 battery maintenance and for lithium batteries from 2Ah to 15Ah for 24-7 battery maintenance.

How fast does OptiMate 4 recharge batteries?

Charge time on a flat but otherwise undamaged battery: a 12Ah battery should take no more than about 12 hours to progress to the self-discharge check. Deep-discharged batteries may take significantly longer, a full charge may not be achieved within the hour charge safety limit. In this case.

How to charge and maintain your BMW motorcycle battery?

When I charge through my BMW motorcycle's 12V socket, the test light LED #6 (green) does not always remain on, LED #7 (yellow) turns on as well, why?

BMW Motorrad changed how the battery is cared for through the 12V socket from the 2023 / 2024 model years, the system will turn and and allow charging, but maintenance float charge is not allowed. 

OptiMate 4 Quad Program will turn on the socket and charge the battery up to 14.4V, stop charging and then it monitors the battery once every hour to make sure it remains optimally charged. The moment the battery voltage drops below optimal state of charge (90% for AGM lead-acid & 70% for LFP Lithium) the test LED #7 (yellow) turns on together with LED #6 (green). This triggers the recharge cycle. 

Following the recharge cycle LED #6 (green) should once again turn on alone. 

This 24-7 maintenance cycle repeats as long as the charger remains connected.

When I charge my bike’s Lithium LFP battery, the test light LED #6 (green) does not always remain on by itself, sometimes LED #7 (yellow) turns on as well, why?

Lithium batteries do not receive continuous hourly maintenance charging as it is not recommended for lithium batteries.  

The optimal charge level for a resting (not used) lithium battery is between 70-90%. The OptiMate 4 Quad program checks battery charge level hourly and if it senses it is below optimal state of charge (70% for LFP Lithium) the test LED #7 (yellow) turns on together with LED #6 (green). This triggers the lithium float maintenance charge cycle that will bring the battery back up to 90% and within the optimal charge range. 

Following  every lithium float maintenance charge cycle LED #6 (green) should once again turn on alone. 

The LFP lithium maintenance cycle repeats as long as the charger remains connected. It may only occur every few days or weeks. Your battery will always be kept within the optimal range for longest battery life.

LED #1a, #1b, #2 are program selection LEDs. Selection can be made before connecting to the battery or vehicle. 

#1a : Pb - direct* charging of  any lead-acid battery (STD flooded / wet-cell, sealed AGM or GEL).

#1b : LFP - direct* charging of a lithium motorcycle battery made from LFP (LiFePO4) technology. 

*direct - connect to battery with  battery crocodile clips or fitted battery lead. 

#2 : CAN-bus - charge through the CAN-bus controlled 12V socket of a BMW motorcycle. 

Indication modes: BLINKS  when handshake signal for BMW Motorrad system is delivered. SOLID when connection has been established and during charging and 24-7 maintenance. 

LED #2 indicates together with #1a or #1b. 

#1a + #2: charge a BMW motorcycle’s lead-acid battery.

#1b + #2: charge a BMW motorcycle’s lithium battery.

 

LED #3, #4 and #5 indicate when charge is delivered to the battery. 

#3: 0 to 49% state of charge / SAVE charge step is active.  

#4: 50 to 74% state of charge / BULK charge step is active. 

#5: 75%+ state of charge. OPTIMIZE charge step is active. 

 

LED #6, #7 & #8 indicate state of charge (S.O.H.) after charging has been completed, and, when periodic maintenance charge is delivered to the battery. This may be hourly, daily or weekly, depends on the selected charge program.

What do the test LED #6, 7 & 8 indications mean? How do I know if my battery is healthy or not?

LED #6 (green), #7 (yellow) & #8 indicate state of charge (S.O.H.) of the connected battery after charging has been completed and the battery voltage has settled. A battery’s voltage is directly proportional to its state of charge, as indicated on the SOH tables for Pb lead-acid and LFP lithium batteries. 

NOTE: during programs 2, 3 and 4 test indication may alternate between LED #6 (green) on alone and LED #6 (green) & LED #7 on together. This is normal.
